A double materiality assessment you can defend.

Habitat runs double materiality assessments for companies preparing CSRD reports, VSME disclosures and bank or customer ESG requests. The method follows ESRS 1, the timeline is published — two to six months — and CSRD readiness is built in from the first workshop.

The definition

What double materiality actually means.

Under ESRS 1 — chapter 3 of Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2772 — a sustainability matter is material if it is material from the impact perspective, the financial perspective, or both. That one sentence decides what your entire sustainability report must cover, which is why the assessment comes first and everything else follows from it.

Impact materiality looks outward: your company's actual or potential, positive or negative effects on people and the environment, over the short, medium or long term, across your own operations and your value chain. Financial materiality looks inward: sustainability matters that generate — or can reasonably be expected to generate — material risks or opportunities for your development, financial position, performance, cash flows, or cost of and access to capital.

Either test alone is enough to trigger disclosure. A topic cannot be dropped because it has no near-term financial effect, and it cannot be dropped because the harm sits outside your own gates. If the rulebook feels like it moved under your feet this year, it did — our map of the EU ESG rules in 2026 shows where double materiality now sits after the Omnibus.

Deliverables

What you walk away with.

  • Methodology note — scoring scales, thresholds and sources, written down so the exercise is repeatable next year.
  • IRO register — every impact, risk and opportunity assessed, not only the ones that made the cut.
  • Materiality matrix and material-topic list — validated by management and mapped to the ESRS topics.
  • Documented exclusions — why each non-material topic was set aside; the first thing an assurance provider asks for.
  • Disclosure roadmap — which datapoints your material topics pull in, what data exists today and what must be built.
  • A measurement path — where climate and energy come out material, our platform Karbon360° turns energy and activity data into the GHG inventory your disclosures stand on.
Cost

What a double materiality assessment costs.

Most providers will not put a number or a timeline anywhere near this service, because open-ended discovery pays better. We work the other way round: a scoped proposal with the deliverables, the timeline and the price in writing — a fixed-fee quote within 48 hours of a scoping conversation.

Three things move the fee: how many entities and markets the assessment covers, how complex your value chain is, and how deep the stakeholder programme needs to go. Settle those three and the quote is fixed — no day-rate drift, no re-opened scope halfway through.

The reporting clock

Wave-2 companies that meet the post-Omnibus thresholds — more than 1,000 employees and more than EUR 450 million net turnover under Directive (EU) 2026/470 — report for the first time in 2028, on FY2027. The revised ESRS apply from financial years beginning 1 January 2027. A FY2027 reporter wants validated materiality results in hand before that year begins: on a two-to-six-month assessment, the comfortable start window is now.

FAQ

Frequently asked.

How long does a double materiality assessment take?
Two to six months from kick-off to validated results. A single-entity company with a short value chain and an engaged decision-maker lands near two; a multi-entity group with a cross-border value chain and a full stakeholder programme needs closer to six. We put your position in that range in writing before we start.
How much does a double materiality assessment cost?
There is no honest single number, because scope moves it. What we commit to instead: a fixed-fee quote within 48 hours of a scoping conversation, with scope, timeline and price in writing. The fee is driven by entity count, value-chain complexity and the depth of stakeholder engagement — and it does not change unless you change the scope.
Do we still need a double materiality assessment after the Omnibus?
If the CSRD applies to you, yes — double materiality under ESRS 1 remains the gateway that decides what you report. The Omnibus changed who is in scope, not the method: Directive (EU) 2026/470 limits mandatory CSRD reporting to undertakings with more than 1,000 employees and more than EUR 450 million net turnover, and listed SMEs were removed. Not sure where you land? Start with our post-Omnibus CSRD scope walkthrough.
What is the difference between impact materiality and financial materiality?
Impact materiality is the outward test: actual or potential, positive or negative effects on people and the environment across your operations and value chain, over the short, medium or long term. Financial materiality is the inward test: sustainability matters that create — or can reasonably be expected to create — material risks or opportunities for your financial position, performance, cash flows, or cost of and access to capital. A matter is material, and must be disclosed, if it passes either test (ESRS 1, Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2772).
Is a double materiality assessment required for VSME reporting?
The VSME standard — annexed to Commission Recommendation (EU) 2025/1710 — is voluntary and built for non-listed SMEs answering banks and large customers; it does not pull you into CSRD. For VSME reporters we run a proportionate materiality screen instead of the full ESRS exercise: the same discipline at a smaller scale, so the report answers what your bank or buyer actually asks.
